“Dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.” Illustration 11 (c. 1884) by Gustave Doré for Edgar Allan Poe’s Raven
This is from a magazine-sized children’s book, Jack the Giant Killer, circa 1880s. It’s interesting to see the gruesomeness common to the telling of old folk tales merged with the modern multi-color illustrations that we now take for granted in children’s books. But this was printed using wood blocks, and as you may notice with the misplaced blue layer, the main challenge with this kind of printing process (including early color lithography) was the registration (alignment). Still a great illustration by J.B Geyser.
